Venture Crew 759

Notes for March 22, 2008 meeting

Created March 23, 2009

Minutes from March 8, 2009 meeting: Minutes approved.

Event recap:

Attendance for the climbing wall was small, but those that went had a good time.

Upcoming Events:

1)      Paint Ball: activity was postponed due projected low attendance.  We need to schedule.  Wes offered another option; instead of going to a center, we could go small scale and use an area by his church.  We would need to borrow or buy guns if we did this option.

2)      Pizza Hut Fundraiser: March 25 from 5-9 (time corrected from 10) pm at the Elkridge Pizza Hut on Washington Blvd at Montgomery Rd. See flyer. Colin and Lee said that they may host.

3)      Adventuree(“scavenger-ree”): March 27-29.  $12 for food payable at event.  Camp Safran in Broad Creek.   White water rescue is Crew’s activity.  Lee is going to try to also set up a sport activity for our crew to host.

4)      Car Wash: April 4th.  There are 4 gas stations that are willing to help.  Ben was not there to report on Don Pablo.  Ashleigh will call the various locations to see if April 4 and 11th are open.  The Philmont crew may be having the rescheduled back pack trip on the weekend of April 3-5.

5)      Venture Quest: April 17-19 at Broad Creek. Hosted by Area 6.  Ashleigh and Wes said they may attend.  Are there others interested?  There are details and links for this event on the crew web page.  We should support this event since it is being hosted by out council.  The Philmont crew will be on a back pack hike (20 mile with the troop)

6)      Basketball Tournament: May 9th.  Todd found out that area courts cost $250 for 4 hours.  Ashleigh has friends that can officiate. Todd was asked to see which facilities are still open.  We need to work out the logistics quickly.  Wes is going to check on the Howard county recreation facility on Dorsey Road to see if they are available.  It was suggested that we try to get donated gift cards as prizes.  Possible 5 on 5 with teams broken into “18 and under” and over 18.  Fees would be $5 per person.

7)      Shooting Sports: Postponed until May 23th   (Memorial weekend).  This was rescheduled due to conflicts with the Powder Horn training that Todd and Dale will be attending. The crew is going to ask the troop if we can borrow archery equipment.

8)      White Water Rafting: October 9-11

9)      Spaghetti dinner: October 17th.  Wes will POC the event and set up the time, date and facility (Jessup Community hall).  Proposed price structure: $8 adult, $7 senior and students with ID, $5 children (2-10).

10)  SCUBA intro tentatively scheduled for November 12 or 19.

To Be Done:

1)      CREW IS TASKED TO COME UP WITH MEETING ACTIVITIES!!!!!  Let’s make the meetings fun!!!!  The goal is to have business done in 20-30 minutes and then do the activity to make the meeting more fun and informative. Still need to work on this.

2)      “Super Activity” is being planned for December 25 or 26, 2009 to January 2 or 3, 2010 depending on the rates. Dale and Todd are going to see if they can find packages for Colorado or Utah.  Todd checked with the airlines and December 26th appears to be the cheapest (with the exception of the morning of the 25th).  Flights cost for Dec 26th through Jan 3rd were fairly constant.

3)      Mount Hebron spring festival is scheduled for April 25th.  The cleanup usually takes place shortly before the festival, but the date has not been set at this time. This would be a good opportunity to get our name out to the church which should help with fundraisers such as basket bingo and spaghetti dinners.

4)      We need to work out the logistics for the basket ball tournament (delayed until May 9th), spaghetti dinner (Oct 17) and basket bingo.

5)      A quote for tee shirts emailed out.  Todd reported the company can print from a graphic which is cheaper that silk screening ($90 set up versus the $210 figure on the quote).  Todd is going to get an additional quote from another company.

6)      Todd talked to Tammy Cinatto about the full first aid/CPR course.  The dates will be May 5, 12, and 19 from 7-9pm. Cost is $40.

7)      Every month Ashleigh wants to set up an activity, a service project and a fundraiser.

8)      Check to see if shoot gun and archery ranges are available at Broad creek

Fundraising:

1)      The crew is considering the following fundraisers: restaurants bake sales, basketball tournaments, spaghetti dinners, basket bingo.  Ideas rejected: coffee house, pizza sales, bowling night, car wash.

2)      Wes mentioned that we could do a car show.  This has minimal logistics and good potential to make money.  We could have a popular choice award that would receive a trophy.  We just need to state that that event is “not insured” on the flyers.  August appears to be a good time to have this event.

Service projects:

Wes‘s Pastor said there are plenty of things that can be done around the church including:
1) Extension of the front porch.
2) Landscaping
3) Building of a shed
4) Laying down a laminate floor in the kitchen area
5) The parking lot needs to be leveled (but I am not sure when because of the expense)
Todd said that some of these would make good eagle projects for the several scouts in the troop that are preparing for Eagle.

Announcements:

1)      Due to busy schedules for April and May, Gabe’s service project is being moved to June 27th.

2)      It was pointed that Meeting dates are scheduled for Mother’s Day May 10th, Powder Horn May 17th and Father’s Day June 21st.
