I wrote "Cret" in 1994, the second short story I ever wrote and the one destined to dominate my future plans. It was a simple, derivative dinosaur story written by an 11-year-old, based on another short story, "Herding With the Hadrosaurs" by Michael (or is it Greg?) Bishop. "Hadrosaurs" involved a family of colonists trekking into the Late Cretaceous through a "geologic time-slip" spawned by an asteroid impact. The original "Cret" involved a group of tourists venturing through a "geographic time slip, or GETS (pronounced jets)," also ending up prey to tyrannosaurs.
Since then the basic concept has grown into a bewilderingly complicated science fiction universe I call Timethrall. "Cret" itself, however, has remained stolidly autonomous of this evolution, spreading and filling into its own homegrown paleofiction niche.
