Page layout package features #1
Templates
are
generalised pre-formatted layouts that can be used to create new, specific
publications quickly and easily. DTP software usually includes templates, or
users may create their own. When you use a template, the page setup (including
the fonts) has been done for you and you only need to place the desired text
and graphics on the page. Templates can also be modified to suit. The use of
templates ensures that your documents have a consistent look and feel.
Ruler
guides
are non-printing guides (lines) that
can be moved onto the page (screen) to assist in the placement of objects on
the page. DTP packages have four types of non-printing guides: margin guides, column guides, page boundary
guides and ruler guides.
In fully featured DTP software
there are two very different ways in which you can view a publication. The layout view is used more often where
text, graphics, non-printing guides etc can be seen. The edit view shows text only. This is useful if you wish to
concentrate on the text only eg spell check, repace etc.
Columns are
non-printing vertical areas defined in your publication that serve to limit the
text and graphics. Columns are delimited on the screen by non-printing lines.
Columns can be set up on master pages so that the same column layout will be
used on all pages of a multi-page document.
Body type is rarely set so that it extends in one unbroken line across
the page. Because long, continuous lines of text are hard to read. Instead,
columns should be used to shorten lines of type. If lines are too short there
is frequent hyphenation and the document becomes too hard to read.
Master
pages
are templates for specific publications. Master pages contain basic design
elements that will be repeated on most pages of the publication, such as
headers, footers, page numbers, company logos and printed lines between
columns.
