9.4 Data

Data can be transmitted in serial or parallel. A serial cable generally has fewer wires than an parallel cable. Serial transmission can be synchronous(all data needs to be sent at the same rate) or asynchronous(data has special start/stop bits and is faster)

The transmission mode can be simplex, half duplex or duplex.

Protocol is the rules for sending data between computers.

Error checking can be done  with parity bits. An extra bit is sent with a 7-bit binary number. If it is even parity then there must be an even number of ones transmitted. If it is odd parity then an odd number of ones must be transmitted. Errors are not picked up if there is more than one error in a transmission.
