8.2 Software

Wordprocessors, databases and spreadsheets are the three common types of software used in information systems.

A prepared database (closed) contains information about a specific subject eg encyclopaedia

An empty database (flexible) allows data to be entered and changed.

True or False? Write out the true sentences and change the false sentences so that they are true.

Three types of software commonly used in information systems are : word processors, spreadsheets and databases.

A spreadsheet is used to write letters, reports, assignments, articles or books.

Word processors allow mistakes to be corrected and text moved before printing.

Databases are used to plan a budget, calculate loan repayment, keep track of income and expenses and perform other activities dealing with numbers.

Spreadsheets allow calculations to be performed quickly and accurately.

Recalculations on a spreadsheet help decision making.

Part of a spreadsheet can be used in a report.

A database is an organised collection of data that has only been used in the last 20 years.

Cross referencing does not allow databases to search for data quickly and accurately.

Computerised databases can be updated without having to type all the data.
