16.3 Copying Data

Values, labels, cell references and formulas can be copied from one cell to another, or to a range of cells. Formulas can change depending on whether absolute referencing or relative referencing is used. Absolute referencing keeps the formula exactly the same. The $ sign is used in absolute referencing. Relative referencing changes the formula slightly depending on the location.

A template is a document created for repeated use. Spreadsheet templates have the advantages

·        Layout-the labels and formulas are already entered

·        Knowledge-it does not require a detailed understanding to use

·        Fully tested

·        Adaptable-can be changed to suit application

True or False? Write out the true sentences and change the false sentences so that they are true.

It is impossible to copy formulae from one cell to another.

The actions to copy data in a spreadsheet are similar to a word porcessor.

The contents of one cell can be copied into a range of adjacent cells.

Absolute referencing copies the mathematical processes but changes the cell references so that they relate to the destination.

Circular referencing is another way of copying a formula.

Relative referencing does not change the contents of the formula in the source cell.

It is possible to copy part of the formula as an absolute copy and part of the formula as a relative copy.

A template is a document that is used once.

Cells in a template are often locked to prevent accidental deletion.

Templates can save you a considerable amount of time creating a spreadsheet.
