Stair-step moss (Hylocomuim splendens)
The name Hylocomuim is for the Greek word hyle, which means wood, and muim, is an ancient name for moss, meaning moss of the forest. The name splendens is Latin, for the word shinning. Stair-step moss often is found growing with Big Red Stem. Growing alone or with Big Red Stem, Stai-step moss makes a very springy mat of moss. It can be confused with Big Red Stem, but Stair-step moss is less shiny than big red stem. Stair-step moss is the only moss with step-like branches. You can estimate the age of Stair-step moss by counting the annual "steps" that it grows each year. Star-step moss has been used as green carpets for floral exhibitions.
