| KDI fans and users, I have good news and bad news. The bad news first, KDI is no longer developing new software for FLaM OS 2.0,2.1,or 3.0 and Software updates will cease December 31st 2009. Now for the Good news! The reason behind these changes is a new OS! In the works right now is a brand new OS with all of the functionality and ease of use that users have come to expect from KDI software, but FLaM was based on the old KS-OS and Fedora Linux. KS-OS thrived in older machines because it was designed for older machines. The truth is much of the source code was completely unchanged since its first conception in 2004. It was originally designed to run on a 700mhz processor with 128mb RAM, well big flippin deal right? My lack of foresight at the time does not allow for 32bit multithreads or GPU?s (Graphical Processing Units). This became a concern when designing FLaM 3.0 due to the fact that the new Video Engine was going in it. 3.0 came out pretty darn good but when running two 3d apps at the same time, frame rates get skewed. Another design flaw is that of basing the FLaM OS on the Fedora version of the linux kernel. This was nice because YUM allowed KDI to make its own repository for KS-OS packages (YUM is probably the best package manager I?ve seen, and it will be missed) However, Fedora has a LOT of overhead, and is mostly comprised of binaries. The window manager FLaM used was also a problem. GNOME has a lot of overhead and very little integratability with KS-OS or any other 16 bit system at that. So any KDI specific software was slower due to the fact that it was through an emulator of sorts. VeloX promises to address all these problems and is already about 80% done. The KS-OS has been replaced by the new 32/64bit KDI IOS. The linux subsystem is now made from a compiled and highly altered version of Slackware 11. The environment is now KDE, and so far the code for KDE has been more than superb! These MAJOR mods will change a lot here, namely: RPMs are still supported but the primary packages are now .tlz and .kdip and are used with slapt-get package management (the native manager for Slackware, another good package manager with modding available to run a dual kernel system!) Recent testing shows it runs multitasked programs 31% faster than FLaM 3.0 VICTOR edition (DAMN THATS FAST) and Graphics 3d programs 129% faster (in real time with 2 sources!) plus the new environment is even MORE customizable. KDI and KS-OS programs fun 490% faster. that figure is correct. 490%. Sounds too good to be true? It gets better. There is a new Migration Tool for Windows and one in the works for mac. At the time of install you can select an installation of windows and the new VeloX will copy all your programs, fonts, and files to your new VeloX system. I dont know if that blows you away to the same magnitude that I?m proud of it, but I think this system is AMAZING! FLaM was great, but has been upgraded to platinum baby. -Kurtis Davis (KDI President) |
