NASA personnel assumed it was a casual remark
referring to a colleague or some rival Soviet cosmonaut;
upon checking, though, they could find no Gorsky
in either the Russian or the American space program.
Over the years, many people questioned Armstrong
as to what the "Good luck, Mr. Gorsky" statement meant,
but each time he responded with only a mysterious smile.
On July 5, 1995, in Tampa Bay, Florida,
while Armstrong was answering questions following a speech,
a reporter brought up the 26-year-old question.
Mr. Gorsky having died some months earlier,
Armstrong felt he could at last answer the question
without sullying Gorsky's character.
When he was a kid in a small midwestern town during the 30's,
Armstrong and a friend were playing baseball in the backyard
when the friend hit a fly ball that landed
in his neighbor (Gorsky)'s yard just under the bedroom window.
As he leaned over to retrieve the ball,
young Armstrong heard Mrs. Gorsky shouting at her husband,
"Sex! You want sex?!?!
You'll get sex when the kid next door walks on the moon!"
