This particular goddess is of Celtic origin. An earth mother type goddess, she is usually associated with life, death, sexuality and fertility. Depicted as a hairless and skeletal crone with her legs apart and holding her vagina open. This is not meant to be a sexual depiction but of showing a gateway. Where does the gateway lead? Many places I believe, though I am thinking that it leads to birth and to the afterlife. What surprises me is that Sila has been found in Irish churches though she has been tamed to a more "modest" figure. I am not saying that all depictions exist, many were destroyed long ago. But still if you look in the right places, you will see Sila peering down at you. I can imagine alot of people get freaked out by a very frank, very naked statue or carving seeming to stare back at them. I am going to look into this more but from what I hear, Sila is still being used in Ireland. Don't quote me on it. But from what I can tell, pregnant women who go into labor lean against a particular statue of the goddess in order to receive her help and blessing. I could be wrong so like I said, don't quote me on it.
So far, there isn't much I have found that doesn't repeat itself. I will continue researching this goddess I have been lucky enough to be named after. Keep checking for updates. |
