Fact:

The name HAL is an acronym for Hueuristically programed ALgorithmic computer. It was noticed that the letters H.A.L. each came one letter after the letters  I.B.M in the alphabet, which led people to belive that Kubrick and Clarke were making a joke at IBM's expense. Arthur C. Clarke originally planned to name the computer Athena, and make it a female
