Eyes Wide Shut, Kubrick's final finished film (remember AI). Starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, is a dreamlike journey through sexual fantasy and domesticity. The film centers on the adventures, both real and imagined, of Bill Halford and he struggles to deal with his wife's infidelity and gome to terms with his badly bruised manhood. The audience plays the role of voeurer, as we watch reality slip away. Only to be replaced by a cruel and malicious world, where not everything is as it seems. Was it real or was it imagined? Thats something I'm still trying to figure out.
This is a beautiful film. I am a great admirer of great cinematography, and this film was like music to my eye. I predicted that this film would be nominated for best cinematography at the oscars earlier this year (2000). It wasn't, and this suprised me. From what I understand, Kubrick intentially underexposed the film, and pushed the film a couple stops when it was processed to get that glowing look that the lights had in this film.
Anyway, there were some parts of this film that could have been better, but overall this is still a great film.Plus it is Kubrick's last, which is important since Kubrick was the last true genius filmmaker. |
