Biography

Stanley Kubrick was born July 26th, 1928, in The Bronx, New York, the son of a sucessfull Manhattan physican. He was a lonely child, a misfit. He grew up on the Grand Concourse and 196th Street, and attended Taft High School.

His parents had wanted him to follow in his father's footsteps and become a doctor, but  he graduated highschool with a "C" average, far short of the minimun grades to get into medschool. His love of the cinema began at an early age as he would often sneak down to the local theater at least twice a week to catch the double feature.

"One of the important things about seeing the run-of-the-mill Hollywood films eight times a week was that many of them were so bad....Without even beginning to understand what the problems of making films were, I was taken with the  impression that I could not do a film any worse than the ones I was seeing. I also felt I could, in fact, do them a lot better"

Kubrick became facinated with  photography after his father bought him his first still camera. He first sold his photographys to professional publications while he was still in high school. Later after he left school, a good friend of his was able to get him a job at Look magazine. He was hired as a junior photographer at $50 a week. After 6 months he advanced to staff photograher. He traveled around the country and abroad learning "a lot about people and things".

The first film he directed was a short documentary about the boxer Walter Carlos. called the "Day of the Fight" which he sold to RKO for a small profit. This modest documentary marked the beginning of his film career.

All in all, Kubrick was married a total of three times. His last marriage to Christiane Harlan. Kubrick had three daughters. After leaving the United States in the mid-sixties, Kubrick spent the remainder of his life living in the outskirts of London.

Stanley Kubrick died of natural causes at his home, early in 1999.
