CREED Weathered ** (Wind-Up/Sony)
Now that Creed has its own imitators (Nickleback, POD, Staind, etc.), you'd
think its second-rate Seattle impersonation would sound a bit original,
fresh even. Sadly, the band's third album, Weathered, is full of the same
MOR faux-grunge radio smashes that allowed their previous discs My
Own Prison and Human Clay to linger on the charts for years. Some heavy
moments (including the two opening tracks) almost rock, but the album is
mostly glorified power ballads. "Who's Got My Back?" (a pretentious
eight-minute-long epic complete with Cherokee Indian prayer) and "My
Sacrifice" (which tries to rip off Pearl Jam and Led Zeppelin) are particularly
awful. With his pained, overwrought delivery, singer Scott Stapp makes Ed
Kowalczyk from Live seem like a humble, modest guy. Closing Weathered
with a "Lullaby" just reinforces how uncool Creed really is, even compared
to the even worse bands they've spawned.
