Bonsai is the art of making small dwarf trees. You can use any tree, shrub or bush. Nothing is to strange.
You can buy full grown bonsais or make your own from plants purchased from nurserys, use plants in 1-5 gallon planter, or make them from seedlings, cuttings or any other propagating techniques.

When started your bonsai from a seedling it is best to keep the tree in the ground for the first year of it's life. Then the tree can be placed in a pot with bozai soil (a mixure of sand and soil) and it will mature in about 5 years.

Bonsai's gain value with age. Some bonsai's that are over a hundred years old will cost you 150+ dollars depending on the dealer.
