HAKAMA

In modern western aikido it is most commonly found that only dan grades wear hakama. They are a kind of status symbol making it easy to spot instructors and high grades on the tatami while training. Also because training whilst wearing hakama is slightly trickier.

The hakama was traditionally a for of protection for riding samurai, protecting the legs from brush and vegitation whilst travelling and so are made of a heavy cloth also enabling freedom of movement.

The Hakama has seven pleates, each pleate holds a special significance.

The pleates are named and signify:

Chugi = loyalty, devotion and harmony.
Gi = justice and integrity.
Jin = benevolence, charity, humanity and mercy.
Makoto = truth, sincerity and honesty.
Meiyo = honor, glory and prestige.
Rei = etiquette and courtesy.
Yuki = bravery.
