In this painting, the sky above is bright daylight, but the house and trees are shrouded with shadows, as if it were late at night. Write about something sunny. Take the calm blue of the sky and the careless tumbling of the white clouds as your cue. You can describe a person, a town, a scene -- whatever you like. Done? Now write the exact opposite. The idea is to go as far as you can in both extremes. Which scenario appeals more to your writerly senses? A further challenge: when you've done both parts of the exercise, see if you can find a way to combine what you've written without losing the distinct flavor of either the dark or the light. Alternatively, try writing something which has niether shadow nor light. Can you do it? Is it interesting? |
