The famous emperor is here imortalized crossing over the Alps to attack Austria. The pale figures in the backround are probably his soldiers, who are dragging heavy cannons through the snow and ice of the Great St. Bernard pass.
Write about a historical event (one you know well enough that you aren't seduced away from your writing by the siren's call of research.) Write about it first from the perspective of someone crucial to the event. Then turn around and write about it from the perspective of someone "in the background."
