Lettuce Poem

Two heads of lettuce
bloom in the far corner
of our yard,
progeny of my seed,
my fertilizing, my watering.
Two heads of lettuce
are plucked from the earth,
borne up from the depths
of my garden by proud hands.
Two heads of lettuce
are enthroned on the kitchen table,
a king and queen now,
too choice to be eaten.
Remember how we once made love
so often, the vegetables
suffered from my neglect,
shriveled and died long
before they reached the kitchen.
Now they're full and healthy enough
to enter in a show.
Remember how I couldn't
keep my hands off you.
Admire the heads of lettuce
while they live.
This is what I was
trying to tell you
