Someone To Talk To

I've an inkling now,
how old men must die
for someone to talk to.
You've been gone
less than a day,
and already
I have to stop myself
from sidling up to strangers
with news dull as leaves
unraked over a long winter.

I'm tempted
to invite the mailman in
for a game of gin, a few beers,
his opinion on the Orioles.
I make a withdrawal
to hear the teller chirp,
"Have a real nice day."

I go shopping—
to talk proudly
to the cashier about my wife,
invited to present a paper
at a prestigious conference.

What I don't say
is that each time you leave
it's even worse
than the time before,
me pacing our rooms
like a caged wolf
bereft of his mate.
