PART 4

Pulling up outside Abby's apartment block Kerry stopped the car. Abby didn't move so Kerry turned off the engine.

Kerry looked in the rearview mirror and saw her son sound asleep in his car seat. She turned her head and looked at her travel companion. Abby was looking up at her building. Kerry struggled with whether she should speak or not but decided to wait and see what Abby did next.

Breathing in hard and blowing it out she turned to see Kerry watching her. She reddened a little. Kerry could see was how hard Abby was finding this. 'You came to see me twice today. There's something wrong Abby and you want to talk about it and I...'

Cutting Kerry off Abby said, 'I don't want to talk about it but I do need to talk about it.' Abby stopped speaking and just as Kerry was about to say something Abby added, 'I'm sorry for interrupting.' Taking a second she spoke again, 'Do you want to come up stairs for a drink?'

'I would but I need to get Henry home and to bed.'

'Of course I'm sorry, I don't know how I could forget that.' Abby felt like a fool and turned to look out the window.

'It's fine Abby. Why don't you come back to mine. We don't live that far apart. You can drive my car home so you don't have to worry about getting stranded.'

'How would you get to work in the morning?' Abby asked.

'You could come and pick me up. If you want but you should know if anyone sees us there will be rumours. Two people leaving together and showing up together don't go well together when one of the two women is a lesbian.' Kerry chuckled a little and so did Abby.

'I don't care what anyone thinks of me Kerry. I don't care if anyone thinks I'm lesbian. I've been called a lot worse.'

'So my place then?' Kerry asked. Abby nodded. Kerry started the car and off they went again, this time heading to Kerry's place.

Abby said nothing the whole way. Kerry watched the road, looked the mirror at her son and looked over at her friend. The roads  were empty, her son was still sound asleep but Abby was clearly struggling with something.

Kerry pulled up outside her building. Abby helped Kerry get Henry and Kerry's things inside out the cold.

'I'll get Henry ready and put to bed. The kitchens that way,' Kerry indicated with her head, 'if you want to make coffee. When I'm done with this one I'll make us a little something to eat.'

Abby nodded and walked to the kitchen. She stood in the doorway and watched Kerry carry her son in one hand while using her crutch to help her walk. So capable Abby thought to herself, she knew in that second that she had chosen the right person to help her. Now all she had to do was put it problem into words, it's the only way Kerry could help her.

Abby walked into the kitchen and couldn't believe it's size and how well equipped it was with all the gadgets. Finding what she needed Abby put on the coffee and waited for Kerry to return from putting Henry to bed.
