Carbon Emissions -- Put your organization on a Carbon Dioxide Diet.
(The Global Cooling Campaign)
Thank you for your interest in calculating your amount of carbon emissions.
The following are estimates to determine the amount of CO2 that your activities emit:

Gasoline
A gallon of gasoline turns into about 20 pounds of carbon dioxide. A typical car consumes about 500 gallons per year at 20 miles per gallon, generating 10,000 pounds of CO2 each year. Plant a tree for every 100 gallons of gasoline used or five trees a year for a typical car (one tree every 2000 miles).
Air travel Based on data supplied by several airlines, it is a safe rule of thumb to estimate one ton of CO2 for every 2000 kilometers. (Carbon emissions per passenger can be lower if the plane is fully loaded and if the plane is more fuel-efficient.) So plant a tree every 1200 miles. That's about five trees for a round trip ticket New York - Los Angeles.
Electricity About 1.5 pounds of CO2 per kilowatt-hour (if utilities in your state use more coal than natural gas to generate electricity, the amount is higher, closer to 2 pounds of carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gasoline
Method one:   _____________ gallons per year x 20
(A) = _____________________ pounds of CO2 from gasoline.

Method two:  _____________ number of cars
x 10,000 pounds for a typical car
(A) = _________________pounds of carbon dioxide per year.
(This method can be used for employees by estimating that one third of the miles put on a typical car are for commuting to and from work. A business that wants to estimate its employees' carbon emissions can use the ball park estimate of 4,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per year per employee who commutes by car.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Air travel
_____________ miles of travel x 1.6 pounds per passenger-mile
(B) = ____________ pounds of CO2 for air travel.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Electricity
__________ kilowatt-hours/month x 12 months x 1.5 pounds
( C ) = __________ pounds of CO2 for electricity.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(A) + (B) + (C) + (D**) = _______________ pounds of CO2
Divide by 2000 = ________________ tons of CO2
======================================================================================
One tree planted in the tropics can absorb one ton of CO2 over its lifetime, so plant (or sponsor) one tree for each ton that you generate.  To receive a list of tree planting programs or if you have any additional questions, send a message to [email protected]   or Fax to 1+ 954.565.8718 Thanks for doing your part in offsetting your impact on the environment.  This sheet is not copyrighted and you are invited to make as many copies as you want.  Please help others become "global cooling."                       The Global Cooling Campaign.
