Robert Kaplan is one of my heroes, and all of his books can be read with pleasure and to the reader�s great benefit. This book was originally written in 1990, while the Soviet Union was being driven out of Afghanistan, and ultimately out of existence, but he has added a chapter updating to 2000 and a post-September 11 introduction.
