Classic - Dance Of Love
B. Subhash has tackled musicals [DISCO DANCER, DANCE DANCE], revenge drama [KASAM
PAIDA KARNE WALE KI], adventure flick [TARZAN], action fare [COMMANDO]…
practically every genre in the past.
Now, perhaps, joining the wave of 'skin show' flicks, he comes up with CLASSIC -
DANCE OF LOVE. Nothing wrong with following a trend, but CLASSIC - DANCE OF LOVE
comes at a time when the marquee has had more than its share of bare-dare films.
Even otherwise, CLASSIC - DANCE OF LOVE relies largely on skin show, while the
meat [script] takes a complete backseat. Simply put, CLASSIC - DANCE OF LOVE
doesn't really have the stamina for the sprint!
Dr. Ram Gopal Acharya [Mithun Chakraborty] preaches the staunch difference
between paap and punya. One of his life's truisms is that man should never
succumb to temptation and sex to ‘sinners’ - women who seduce men for money and
ultimately destroy them.
Doli [Meghna Naidu] is a bar dancer. She meets Suraj [Vikas Bhardwaj], a
London-based tycoon’s son, who is in India for an assignment. Doli and Suraj
fall in love and dream of a happy future.
But the relationship bothers Suraj’s father [Navin Nischol], who requests his
friend Acharya to somehow put an end to it. Acharya insults Doli and calls her a
woman with no scruples.
Later, Doli joins Acharya’s ashram and exposes Acharya’s lustful intentions to
his disciples.
The problem with CLASSIC - DANCE OF LOVE is that it rests on a thin plot. The
first half looks at the love affair, with skin show in generous doses.
Unfortunately, the romance is so half-hearted that it fails to strike a chord.
The vital sequence - Mithun confronting the lovers - although well executed,
appears overdramatic. Another jarring aspect in the first half is the placement
of songs, which appear after brief intervals.
The post-interval portions are better, with the story now focusing on Mithun and
Meghna. But there's not much to look forward to barring a few interesting
sequences.
B. Subhash's direction leaves a lot to be desired. Bappi Lahiri's music is
functional. The title song, filmed on Mithun [at the very start of the film] is
the best track. Aggressive promotion of the songs might've helped.
Cinematography [Manoj Gupta] is okay. Dialogues [Malvika-Shweta] are wonderful
at places.
Mithun Chakraborty does an okay job. Meghna Naidu needs to get her expressions
right. Also, her dialogue delivery is faulty. Vikas Bharadwaj has to work on his
acting skills. Navin Nischol and Himani Shivpuri are as usual.
On the whole, CLASSIC - DANCE OF LOVE holds scant appeal.
