Chehraa
When a successful star pair from a blockbuster hit teams up again, you expect
their new film to be equally absorbing.
But CHEHRAA, which teams Dino Morea and Bipasha Basu again after RAAZ [hit] and
GUNAAH [flop], does not recreate any magic whatsoever mainly because
writer-director Saurabh Shukla's script is the biggest culprit. It leads you
nowhere!
In the first place, Saurabh has to take a decision whether to make a commercial
film or 'parallel' cinema. You can't sail in two boats at one time, can you?
CHEHRAA neither qualifies as a thriller, nor is it a consummate love story. If
it’s aimed at the masses, there’s scant entertainment on offer. Honestly,
CHEHRAA tests the patience of the viewers.
Aakash [Dino Morea] and Megha [Bipasha Basu] are students in the same college.
The two fall in love and decide to marry.
Megha has a past. An ugly childhood. Her father [Govind Namdev], a rogue, had
ill-treated her mother [Navni Parihar]. He was an alcoholic and showed no
interest in the family life. Because of this behavior, he once gets into trouble
with a policeman and gets imprisoned. Owing to his misdoings, Megha and her
mother run away to live a peaceful life.
Fifteen years later, the man re-emerges on the scene and starts physically
abusing the wife, now a mentally challenged person. Unable to see her mother
getting tortured and abused, Megha kills her father in a fit of fury.
Five years later, Aakash and Megha meet again. This time, as a patient and
doctor. Megha constantly keeps hallucinating that someone is out to kill her.
But the problem is that she doesn’t have a clue why anyone would want to harm
her. Aakash, a psychiatrist, is now entrusted the case of Megha.
Megha is now married to a tycoon, Chandra Diwan [Irrfan], who believes that his
wife has gone insane. Chandra too has a past: He was a drug addict and his
father had hired Megha to nurse him.
Back to the present: Chandra hires an assassin [Nawab Khan] to eliminate Megha.
But Aakash arrives at the nick of time and saves her every time. The story
shifts to Dubai, when Chandra decides to take not just his wife, but also Aakash
and Reena [Preeti Jhangiani], who loves Aakash since college days.
It’s here that Aakash realizes Chandra’s game plan…
CHEHRAA has nothing much to offer in terms of scripting or execution. There are
no highs or lows in the narrative or interesting twists and turns to keep you
engrossed. In fact, the story moves on aimlessly and the viewer often wonders
what the director is trying to say or convey through the film.
Director Saurabh Shukla has chosen an uninspiring story and the execution is
equally lacklustre. From the scripting point of view, Bipasha's behavior seems
unexplained. She's supposed to be behaving weird all the while. At times, you
feel that she has forgotten her past and at times she seems to be in love with
Dino.
Also, the reason why Irrfan wants to get rid off Bipasha doesn't come across
effectively. Even the Dino-Preeti Jhangiani track [she loves him silently] is a
half-hearted effort.
Music [Anu Malik] is a negative aspect. Barring 'Kabhi Khamosh Baithogi', none
of the songs are worth humming. Cinematography [Fuwad Khan] is eye-pleasing. The
locales of Dubai add to the visual appeal.
CHEHRAA belongs to Bipasha Basu. The actress goes through her difficult part
with admirable ease and emerges trumps. Dino Morea handles his part with
conviction. There’s a noticeable improvement in his acting. Preeti Jhangiani has
no role to talk of. Irrfan is getting typecast in similar roles. Govind Namdev
and Navni Parihar are adequate.
On the whole, CHEHRAA is a weak fare with poor prospects.
