Part 4
As Hyru slowed down, and eventually stooped, completely breathless, she took in
her surroundings. She had run almost back to where the inn stood. She felt
light headed, and dizzy from running so far. Why had she run? It wasn’t as if
there was anything to be afraid of. She felt slightly stupid. She shook her
hair back, pulling it out of her face with her fingers, and composed herself
slightly. There was nothing to be afraid of. She took several deep breaths. The
world steadied itself out somewhat, and, satisfied that she no longer looked
like a scared wreck, she walked up to the inn. She pushed open the door. It was
late, so it came as no surprise to her that the inn was dark. She entered and
walked up to her room. Dark in here too. Neon might
have turned the light on for her, before he went to bed. The lack of noise was
almost as eerie as it had been in the alleyway. She felt her way along the
wall, trying to find a light switch. Was that a sound? She shook her head
violently. Why was she so afraid all of a sudden?
Sighing, she found the light switch. She flicked it on. The room filled with
light. For a few moments. The bag that was pulled
roughly over her head immediately blotted the glare of the lamps from her
vision. She tried to scream, but someone had clamped a hand roughly over her
mouth. She struggled against her captor. But all to no avail. A heavy pole
knocked her unconscious.
Neon paced the streets. But Hyru was nowhere to be found. He was getting
fed up. This was pointless! Where the hell was she? He kicked the wall angrily.
Then immediately wished he hadn’t. The wall was incredibly hard, and his foot
was liable to bruising. She’d probably wander back to the inn before long. Unless the townsfolk had murdered her. No, even if they did
attack her, Hyru was capable of defending herself. She had perfected the fire
spell, and was on her way to mastering the ice one. Although the fire spell
wasn’t the best defensive magic, its attacking power was considerable, and
often stopped enemies in their tracks. They had been in tight corners before,
and it had been the fire spell that saved them. Like that time in the
underground caves. They had found a map which appeared to lead to another
spell, and they had been attacked, while trying to track it down. Yes, Hyru was
capable. But even so, he was her appointed bodyguard, and he had lost her. The
word again flittered through his mind, like a moth craving attention. So he set
it on fire. Another use for the fire spell. That giant moth that attacked. That wasn’t long after they
had met. He knew she could look after herself, but still, his sense of duty
never failed him. Still, he thought that it may be better if he headed back to
the inn and waited for her. He turned, and a sudden feeling of foreboding
jumped up and kicked him in the shins. Something was very wrong. He could sense
it in the air. He may have been paranoid, but he could still sense when
something was really wrong. And now this sixth sense of his hit him. Hyru was
in trouble. He could feel it. Without hesitation, he set of into a sprint, back
to the inn, praying that he would arrive before anything really bad happened to
her.
