Part 6
The trio had walked in silence for some time now, in total silence. Seviara kept shooting glances at Catriona, wondering what had happened to her. Privately she also wondered why a mere human had been chosen to speak with the Moon Oracle, instead of a spirit. It defied all meaning. What could be so special about this girl? Seviara distinctly recalled that she had been seen by the human without meaning to be, but she had put it down to weakened powers due to the departure of the Earth Spirit. She shook her head slightly, and turned her gaze back on the road, which was still dead and cracked, no sign of life flowing through it. It seemed to be worsening by the moment. The faerie, Vyrock, gazed at the ground he was walking on as well. His thoughts were not about either of his two companions, but of his home. He wondered if things were getting worse there, as they were everywhere else. He was silently praying that that they would not be too late to save his people. Catriona’s mind was swimming with thoughts about her meeting with the Moon Oracle. Was there truly something special about her? She had no idea where they were walking, and even if she had the land had passed beyond recognition. She stopped suddenly, causing the other two to trip up as they tried to stop as well. Seviara stood up, brushing herself off angrily.
“Why did you stop like that, human?” Catriona shook her head slightly.
“Where exactly are we heading too?” The fury was clear on Seviara’s face. She shook with anger as she turned on Catriona.
“What do you mean ‘where are we going?’ I thought that you were supposed to know that. After all, the Moon Oracle chose to speak with you over me!” Vyrock stared interestedly at Seviara, who now blushed, so far as it was possible for a spirit to blush. She could hardly believe that she had just voiced her thoughts. She flicked her hair back and stared at Catriona, who looked upset at her outburst. Vyrock spoke now.
“Hey chick, if yer don’t like it no one made yer come along with us!” Seviara flicked her hair again.
“Fine. I do not need a pathetic human and a scheming faerie! I am going!” She turned and flounced away, leaving the other two staring after her. Vyrock rubbed his head.
“Um, I din’t think she’d actually leave.” he turned to give Catriona a grin. The girl was close to tears now, though, and Vyrock’s grin died on his lips. “Don’t worry kiddo. She’ll come crawlin’ back. Lis’n, a good bet would be to head to the fire kingdom, see if it’s as bad as here. We’ve bin headin’ in the right direction, it aint much further. Come on kiddo.” Catriona nodded miserably, and Vyrock walked ahead. Catriona glanced back at Seviara, who was nothing more than a speck on the horizon now, and then followed Vyrock towards the fire kingdom.
Seviara slowed dramatically. She was out of sight of the others, she knew that much. But now, she was on her own. She had no idea why she had run away like that. Perhaps it was because of how she had just spoken to Catriona. But that made no sense. Why was she feeling so guilty about treating the human like that? HHad she become…attached to her? She shook her head softly. Whatever the reason, she was now alone in a dying kingdom, and becoming weaker all the time. She felt desperately lonely. She shouldn’t have left, but the feeling of guilt was so new to her, she had no idea how to deal with it. Slowly, she sank to the floor, wondering what she was going to do now.
The fire kingdom was as bad as the earth kingdom. Snow lay thickly over the floor, and icy winds swept through, chilling Catriona to the bones. She shivered and spoke to Vyrock.
“It’s so cold!” she said, her teeth chattering. Vyrock nodded.
“Course it is. Seems the fire spirits gone too. Without the Fire Spirit here, there’s nothin’ to keep the place warm. It’s a dramatic change, like the earth kingdom.”
“What’s so dramatic?” Catriona asked, curiously.
“Well, this place was generally really hot. There were rivers of lava, active volcanoes, that sort of thing. Now, it’s below freezing and there’s snow everywhere. Anyway kiddo, your gonna freeze soon if we just stand here! Lets get moving.” Catriona nodded, rubbing her arms in a vain attempt to warm herself up. As they trekked deeper into the kingdom, Vyrock was forced to jump onto Catriona’s shoulder, as the snow became too deep for him to walk in. he shook his head.
“This was a bad idea. Look, there’s a cave over there. Lets hide there and get a fire goin’. We’ll have ta work out what to do next from there. We can’t stay out here much longer.” Catriona nodded grimly. Her arms had gone numb, and it was all she could do to keep moving. She trudged slowly towards the cave, the thought of warmth the only thing keeping her going.
