Part 6

Neon’s eyes flickered open. A bird sang a sweet tune outside the window and watery sunlight streamed through the curtains. Neon lay still, slowly recalling the events of the night before. With the sunlight outside it hardly seemed possible that such an awful storm had raged around the lighthouse just the night before. Maybe he had just dreamed everything. But he could not imagine why he would have dreamed about rescuing Rune. With a groan he pulled himself out of bed. His clothes were still damp from the rain. Clearly it had all happened. He could vaguely recall feeling worried, and exhausted. He must have just collapsed on his bed fully clothes the previous night. Slowly he pulled his bedroom door open and walked downstairs. Straight into a disaster zone. The twins were fighting viciously in the hallway, while, Neon saw as he turned in horror, Lillith was trying to persuade Marno that it would be fun to poke a knife into the toaster. He groaned inwardly, and made a move to go and stop them. But before he could get anywhere, Rune loomed in front of him. Well, attempted to loom. He was actually far to small to loom effectively. But, to Neon’s surprise, the kid smiled, and not his usual, evil smile, but a genuine smile. He turned and stopped Marno, poked Lillith and said something softly, before running to the twins and pulling them apart. He turned back to Neon.

“They won’t cause any more trouble Hero!” he said, before running upstairs. Neon was amazed. He couldn’t believe what he had just seen. Slowly, he crossed the living room and sank onto the sofa. Rune was normally the one arranging trouble, not helping him stop it. He was instinctively suspicious about this, wondering what Rune was planning to try. He heard the tell tale giggle of Relicani just behind him. She clambered onto the sofa beside him, before speaking.

“It’s because you saved him last night.” He stared at her in disbelief. He couldn’t believe that the child who, up to that point, had spent his time threatening to “get” him could suddenly think he was a hero.

But over the next two days Neon realised how right Relicani had been. Rune spent every hour he could trying to help Neon. He was practically worshipping at Neon’s feet. The change was remarkable. Neon could barely believe that it was the same child. He supposed a near death experience was enough to change any person. However, he was finding life at the lighthouse far easier now that Rune did not spend his time plotting against him. He even found he was able to relax a little. The days until Hyru returned went past like a dream.

On the third day, he heard footsteps approaching the lighthouse. He stood and walked to the door, opening it. He froze. Walking up the path was Hyru, with Electra close behind. They walked up to Neon. Hyru flung her arms around him and hugged him.

“Sorry I took so long. Did you manage alright?” Neon glanced at Rune, who was standing close behind him. Rune had promised not to say anything about the night of the storm to Electra or Hyru, and Relicani, the only other child who knew, never told people anything unless they persisted in asking. Neon nodded in response to Hyru’s question. Electra walked up, beaming.

“Thank you so much Neon!” Hyru turned to Electra.

“Well, if you’re back, Neon and I will be on our way. We have scrolls to find” Neon nodded, vaguely.

Less than half an hour later, after Hyru and Neon had gathered their things, and some supplies, they headed from the lighthouse, Electra calling to the children to come and say goodbye to them. They headed down the path, stopping as they heard a cry behind them. Turning, they saw Rune running after them. He ran up to Neon and hugged him.

“You gotta come visit!” he said. Neon nodded, surprised, as he realised that he was going to miss Rune, and even as he nodded he knew he would definitely visit again. Rune took a couple of steps back, happy that Neon was going to visit again, yet still sad about the fact that he was leaving. Hyru and Neon turned to leave, waving at Electra, who had by then gathered the children on the steps of the lighthouse to see them off. Neon felt sure he heard Relicani’s giggle carried to them on the wind as the walked off. As they turned out of sight, Hyru leaned over and whispered to Neon.

“So, how did you get Rune to like you?” Neon merely smiled mysteriously, shouldering his sword as they left the lighthouse behind them, and headed back into the wilds, heading on their search to find more scrolls.

THE END

~Final Note- well, its finished! I hope you enjoyed reading it, I certainly enjoyed torturing Neon by forcing him to look after lot of children. But I must also than Neon for letting me put him through that and not attempting to, you know, kill me or something ^_^ but worry not if you want more moonbeam stuff! There are still two shorts about it, and Rainbow City isn’t about to finish anytime soon! I may start another Moonbeam story soon! And who knows, if I feel like it I may have a sequel, where they meet Rune and Relicani again!
