Part 5
Panic took over Neon as the realisation that Rune had fallen. He ran out of the lighthouse into the raging wind and rain. Within moments he was soaked to the skin. Yet he battled against the strong wind, forcing his was over to the cliffs. Staggering as he struggled, he climbed up to the top of the cliff, scratching his hand on the rough rock. Reaching the top, he looked over the cliff. Hanging from a jutting out branch a little way don the cliff face was Rune. He screamed for help again. Neon shouted back over the wind.
“It’s ok. I’m here!” whimpering, Rune looked upwards. Terror was plain in his eyes as he clung to the branch.
“I’m cold!” he shouted. Neon looked wildly for some way to get down to Rune. He was afraid the little brat wouldn’t be able to hold on for much longer. But there was only the cliff face. No handy moss, no creepers. Neon swallowed. He was going to have to climb down the cliff to rescue Rune. Closing his eyes for a moment, he wished that none of this was happening. But when he opened his eyes, the rain still soaked him, and Rune was still hanging from the branch. Taking a deep breath, Neon swung himself over the cliff face. As he swung himself round the wind caught him, throwing him off balance. He smashed hard into the cliff, gasping for air as his breath was knocked from him. Rune was screaming again. Neon gazed back at the lighthouse almost wistfully. He saw a movement at one of the upper windows. He could just make out through the wind and rain the small face of Relicani gazing out at them. Swallowing, he looked down to see were Rune was. Rune was obviously losing his grip. Taking another deep breath, he started to lower himself down the cliff face. The wind buffeted at him relentlessly, threatening to blow him from the cliff. The rain continued to drive against his face. But gradually he was drawing nearer to Rune. As he drew level, he shouted above the raging wind to Rune.
“Rune. You have to take hold of my hand!” Rune shook his head.
“No! you hate me! You’ll drop me!!” groaning inwardly Neon tried to persuade the kid to trust him.
“Oh, come on! If I really hated you I wouldn’t have risked my life climbing down here to get you. I would have pretended I didn’t know where you had gone!” Rune appeared to think about his for a few moments. Suddenly making up his mind, he grabbed at Neon’s hand. Neon just managed to catch the kid. He pulled Rune closer, so as not to drop him. He turned his attention into figuring out how get out of the situation he now found himself in. he was hanging halfway down a cliff with no plausible way of climbing back up again. He took several deep breaths, when something wet hit his face. He yelled out in shock. But above the raving wind he heard a light giggle. He turned his gaze upwards. It was Relicani. She had dropped a rope down to him. He wondered vaguely if he should trust her. But his hands were starting to numb from the cold. As far as he could tell, he had no choice but to trust her. Closing his eyes, he gripped the rope with one hand, testing it to make sure it was secure. Satisfied for the moment, he started to haul himself up the rope, Rune whimpering in his arms.
After a long and gruelling climb Neon hauled himself back on the cliff. He collapsed, laying motionless on the cliff top for a moment. Then he remembered he was with one of the kids who had threatened him. He stood up quickly. Rune was staring at him. Well, that wasn’t different. But the way Rune was staring was. Instead of the normal, evil grin on his face, instead he was staring with awe at Neon. Annoyed, neon took both Relicani and Rune’s hands and dragged them back to the lighthouse. Rune stared at him all the way back. Eventually they were safely inside again. Rune now spoke, awe filling his voice.
“You saved my life!” Relicani giggled. Neon ignored Rune. “My Hero” Rune shouted suddenly, making Neon jump. He turned, just as the child jumped at him, hugging him. Neon staggered backwards into the lighthouse wall.
“AH! GET IT OFF!!” he shouted. Rune didn’t appear to notice. He just kept hugging Neon. Relicani was in fits of laughter at the site. Neon pulled Rune off of his leg.
“Stop it! Now go to bed and get to sleep!” he commanded. Rune smiled.
“Whatever you say!” He turned and ran up the stairs. Neon blinked in surprise. That had been incredibly easy. He shook his head and wandered up to his own room, Relicani following him. He turned to her.
“Sleep! Now!” he pointed to he room. She giggled again, before running off. Rubbing his head Neon headed to his room and collapsed on the bed. That was too close to death he thought, before falling back to sleep.
