Part 2

Neon followed Hyru up to the lighthouse dejectedly. Rune was still staring at him. He stood vaguely in the safely decorated hall of the lighthouse, not really listening as Electra went through all of the things that needed to be known. Hyru was nodding seriously. Neon was thinking maybe he could leave her to baby-sit. If only there was some excuse. He couldn’t just leave. He needed a plan to get out of this. Why didn’t that kid ever blink. If he stayed here Neon could even now see himself getting rid of the kid, one way or another. How could that Electra girl put up with it. Thinking about Electra, she had just said goodbye. They followed her outside to wave her off. She walked down the path, leaving himself and Hyru to deal with the demonic creatures otherwise known as children. Neon wished he knew what Rune was thinking. He was almost certain he was planning something horrible. That smile, it was unnerving. Hyru beamed happily at Neon.

“Isn’t it brilliant! We get to look after these little angels” Angels? What dictionary was Hyru using to look up the meaning of the word ‘angels’? The twins were screaming their heads of at each other now, and even as Neon watched, trying to distract his attention for that stare,  Pyro jumped at Krylo, screaming. The little brat was pummelling his sister to a pulp. Neon gave a snort of laughter.
Yeah, angels, whatever!” Hyru noticed his tone of voice and turned around. She gave a scream, before running to the twins, trying to part them from their bloodthirsty fight.

“Stop it sweeties! Its not nice to fight” she cried, in a motherly tone. Neon felt ill hearing that. The little bastards had possessed her! She was under their spell. His thought seemed verified when Hyru turned to him, angrily

“How could you provoke them like that Neon! Shame on you, not looking after the poor darlings!” Neon’s mouth dropped open. He hadn’t done anything, yet he was getting the blame for the fight! Great! The kids hated him, and had turned Hyru on him. Hyru, meanwhile, turned around and led the children into the house. All except Rune. Rune still stared at Neon, but now, he sidled up to Neon, before tugging on his trouser leg. Neon looked down.

“What do you want?!” he snapped. Rune smiled that creepy, unnerving smile again.

“I’m gonna get you” he said, in a gleeful, quiet, singsong voice. Neon stared. The kid couldn’t be serious!

“Excuse me?” Rune just smiled and shook his head.

“Big mans gonna get in trouble!” he giggled, before running inside. Ok, thought Neon, that was disturbing. Still, at least the kids stopped staring at me now! Slowly, and without much enthusiasm, Neon turned and re-entered the lighthouse. Hyru seemed to have gotten over her earlier angriness. Now she turned to Neon as he entered, a smile of total and complete brain deterioration.

“Aren’t they just so adorable?” she crooned. Yep, there it was, the sheer and horrible falsity that comes from being around small humans for more than five minutes. Hyru would never be able to see anything wrong with them now. Neon groaned inwardly, but he had to at least try to bring back her sanity. He chose exactly the wrong words.

“That Rune kid is a homicidal maniac!! It just threatened to kill me!!!” The Jekyll/Hyde transformation came over Hyru again. From happy, and smiling she turned into a raving monster.

“How could you say such a thing! He’s just a small child! The poor, precious little darling probably doesn’t even know what ‘kill’ means! How could you even suspect a poor defenceless child? What kind of monster are you?” Too late, Neon thought, its too late to save her! She won’t hear a word against them now. He could see Rune sitting on the stairs, staring at him again, the smile even wider, and more patronizing now. The kid was laughing silently at him, he could tell. Dammit! This was going to be a long, and sleepless job. And Neon wasn’t looking forward to it one bit.
