Part 1
Neon and Hyru were in Hurrenell. A good friend of Hyru lived there. Electra, a resident at the lighthouse overlooking the
“No Enemy Shall Pass Here” It was a small child. Neon stared at it.
“Rune! Stop pestering visitors” a voice shouted.
Around the corner came a woman. “I’m terribly sorry. Rune has a thing about
scaring away visitors”
“Electra! Its good to see
you!”
“Hyru! How are you!”
“I’m fine! Oh, by the way, this is my friend Neon!” the small group headed up
to the lighthouse, the girls talking all the way. Rune walked beside Neon. He
was staring evilly at him. Neon was doing his best to ignore the stare, but the
kid didn’t seem to realise he was supposed to blink. Hyru and Electra were
talking about Electra’s life. It seemed that she took in orphaned kids around
the nearby towns and looked after them at the lighthouse. There were eight
children there now, including Rune. That stare was really getting on Neon’s
nerves. Electra lived on her own apart from the kids.
It seemed that some of the children were unusual in some aspects. Rune was
giving Neon a disturbing smile on top of the stare now. As they approached the
lighthouse Electra turned to Hyru.
“Actually, I’m glad you’ve shown up. Can I ask a huge favour of you? I need
someone to look after the children, because I need to leave town for a while.”
The kid was still staring at Neon with the creepy smile.
“Of course we can look after them! Why do you need to leave town?”
“Oh, I need to renew my lighthouse license to look after the children. The town
is three days walk away though. Are you sure?” Neon couldn’t ignore the stare,
no matter how hard he tried.
“Absolutely, we’d be honoured to!”
“Oh thank you so much! This really means a lot to me!” Why didn’t the kid ever
blink!
Electra talked Hyru through the different children’s needs. She introduced them
all. Neon felt he was going to snap if the kid didn’t stop staring soon.
Besides Rune, there were seven others. Lillith, Marno, Aslo,
Domino, Relicani, Pyro, and
Krylo. As far as Neon was concerned, they were
all little weirdoes, from what Electra told them. Lillith
was obsessed with death and destruction, Marno was a
walking accident, Aslo, well, he seemed normal,
Domino who was afraid of everything, Relicani was
forever trying to call upon spirits, demons and the like, and Pyro and Krylo, the twins, well,
one of them was obsessed with fire and the other was obsessed with water. And
then of course there was Rune, who wouldn’t stop staring at Neon. The child who
wouldn’t blink!! Neon wasn’t looking forward to the following days at all. His
sanity seemed to walk out the door and run off with Electra. He turned back to
the lighthouse, dreading the task laid before him.
