Chronicle Four: A Strange Bracelet

My eyes flickered open. I scanned the clearing, taking in the positions of Jet and Geno. I felt kind of surprised to see Geno was still in the clearing with us. Jet sat nearby, watching him with unblinking eyes. I got the feeling he had not slept all night. Quietly I uncurled from my position at the base of the tree and walked quietly over to him. He didn’t even look at me, eyes fixed on Geno, as he spoke.

“So, what’s your plan now? Do you plan to drag this so called explorer along with you?” I nodded, even though I knew he couldn’t see my nod.

“I’m curious about him. What is he doing in this forest? I mean, it is technically Elven territory.” Jet gave a laugh

“How did I know you were going to say that?” he murmured. I gave a smile, and walked over to Geno, shaking him gently, attempting to awaken him. He stirred slightly, his eyes flickering open. He sat up, slowly rubbing his eyes. I crouched beside him and he turned to look at me, still half-asleep.

“Wha’s up?” he mumbled. I glanced at Jet, who was still watching Geno carefully. I shook my head ever so slightly at his suspicion, before turning back to Geno.

“Time to eat” I answered with a grin.

We prepared a quick breakfast, sitting down at the edge of the clearing to eat. While we ate, I asked Geno what he was looking for in the forest. He told us in between bites.

“I’m searching for a bracelet, said to lie in the ruins in the east of the forest”

“A bracelet?” I asked. He nodded

“Not just any bracelet. Its said to hold magic properties. My friend Elco wants to do some research on it, in order to find out exactly what the bracelet does.”

“So you’re searching for these ruins?” he nodded again. I turned to Jet.

“Do you know where these ruins are?” I asked. Jet was silent for a little while, before acknowledging that he did indeed know the whereabouts of the ruins. It was obvious by the look on his face that he knew exactly what I was about to suggest.

“Geno! We can help you!” Geno looked surprised by this statement from me, but I felt enthusiastic about finding a way to get out of heading back to my town, and I knew that I had no idea what else I was going to do. Plus, I was curious about this bracelet. For a reason completely unknown to me, just the description fascinated me. I wondered why. Jewellery had never held much interest for me, so why would this bracelet hold so much fascination? Lost in my thoughts I didn’t even realise that Geno was describing the apparent location of the bracelet. Jet was listening intently, and as Geno finished his description, he stood. I turned my head, giving him a questioning glance. He ran his fingers over dagger lightly, a deep, concentrating look on his face, before slowly turning back to Geno.

“I do know these ruins you speak of . I can take you both there, as long as you promise to touch nothing but the bracelet.” I nodded, jumping up and hugging him.

“let’s go then! Bracelet, here we come!” Geno gave a laugh at my enthusiasm, and I felt sure a slight smile flickered briefly across Jet’s face. We gathered together our things before setting out to the ruins.

As we trekked through the forest, dodging vines, and forcing our way through deep undergrowth, Geno told us more about his friend Elco. I listened intently. Elco sounded like an intriguing person. Geno spoke of the sorts of things that Elco was interested in.

“He’s a scientist. He has an intense fascination about magical object. He created a kind of orb that allows for long distance conversations. Of course it only works if two people have one.”

“Really? How does it work?” Geno paused, thinking about this for a moment, which caused him to stumble over a root. I saw Jet shake his head and I grinned, catching Geno’s arm to steady him.

“I don’t really know how it works. You’ll have to ask Elco. Anyway, he found out of this bracelet from a friend of his. I don’t know too much about it, only that it contains some magical properties, and there was something about moonlight…” I interrupted suddenly.

“Moonlight?” I felt slightly foolish. What had caused me to focus on that word. It was strange. Geno didn’t seem to think anything of it, however.

“Yes. don’t ask me what exactly, I’m afraid I don’t pay too much attention to the details Elco goes into. They don’t really interest me.” I nodded, pushing a low hanging branch to the side to avoid it. What was all this about? Why was I so interested in a bracelet. And why did the fact that moonlight applied somehow to it intrigue me so? It made no sense, yet it was like something was pulling me on. I found myself wondering if destiny existed. If I was destined to meet up with Jet and Geno, and find this bracelet. Why did this strange bracelet have such a hold over me? I noticed that Jet had stopped up ahead. I hurried to join him, following his gaze. I heard Geno draw in a gasp next to me. There, in front of us, lay the once proud remains of a temple. The ruins we sought.
