THE BLACK MARKET: NEONS PAST

Notes from the Authoress: My first Moonbeam Short. Its not as good as I hoped, as it is one of my early fics. Those who are sharp might notice Skye’s input in this fic: Neon’s best friend while at the Black Market was also called Skye.

Rating: PG

Part 1
Hyru and Neon wandered through town. After months of travelling they had arrived back at Neon’s home town of
Beruhg. Neon looked around him. Everything looked so different. Of course he hadn’t been back here for years. Hyru crossed the town to the inn where they were staying. Neon’s parents had been killed years ago; he had no house in Beruhg now. Neon wandered through the streets of Beruhg. Everything seemed familiar, although it looked so different. He could remember the days before he met Hyru like it was just yesterday. His parents had been killed when he was 6 years old, by a house fire. He had only just managed to escape. He had wandered though the town, and everyone had ignored him. Only young, and at a total loss without his parents to guide him, Neon had wandered right out of town and into the wilds. He didn’t get attacked for a while. If he had his life would have probably been a lot different. But nothing attacked him. He wandered miles into the wilds before he was attacked by wolverines. Unable to defend himself he had cried out for help. All the time the wolverines had advanced. Neon had thought that he was going to die. Neon looked around. He had wandered back to the place he had been attacked all those years ago. It seemed a lot shorter now. He could still see the bloodlust in the wolverine’s eyes as they had advanced on him. He could remember their dripping fangs as they tasted their preys fear. He heard the battle cry and saw the flashing steel as he was saved. He could still remember the warrior who had helped him turning to him. He could hear the gruff voice as the stranger asked if the kid was alright. This man had become like father to him. He was the leader of the Black Market. A place of thieves and assassins. A place where the people who had no place in the world went. The leader was called Yicandra, a man with no other purpose in life. He was a good leader. He would protect the members of the Black Market with his life. The delusions that ordinary people thought about the Market were wrong. The people who lived there had no where else in the world to go. Nowhere where they were welcome. They were shunned by the rest of society for some reason or another, sometimes having no choice but to resort to thievery. Yicandra had taught Neon how to fight, and raised him when he no longer had a place in the town. He had become attached to those who ended up in the Black Market.

His name was shouted. He turned, seeing someone approach him.

“It really is you Neon?” Recognition dawned on Neon as he took in the man standing before him, dressed all in black, with amber eyes. It was Skye. Skye had arrived at the Black Market after Neon. He had been afraid. Skye had been chased from his last village when the townsfolk found out what he was. For Skye was a werewolf. He was afraid to tell everyone, they were afraid of him. Even friends of his in the village he came from turned on him when they found out about him. He had become good friends with Neon, and was often his training partner when they trained in fighting. But Skye was even to afraid to reveal to Neon his true identity. Neon had found out completely by accident, one night when they were late returning to the Black Market. It had been cloudy and they hadn’t realised it was the night of a full moon. The clouds had shifted though, and Skye had been caught in the moonlights glare. But Neon didn’t hate him because he was a werewolf. They had remained friends even afterwards.

They walked through the wilds, talking. Neon finally felt at home. He had felt misplaced when they had first arrived, but meeting Skye seemed to make the town like his real home again. Skye and Neon had been partners when they took jobs. If they had to retrieve treasure, steal a valuable object, or even assassinate someone, they always worked together. Of course, Hyru had no idea of Neon’s past. Skye was one of the few people who Neon trusted.  His paranoia had come from his assassination jobs. It was always someone powerful or famous who he got contracts for. He was well aware that he himself was powerful. That’s what made him paranoid. Everyone seemed to be after those who had some sort of power. Hyru couldn’t understand that part of him, and he didn’t want her to find out that he lived in the Black Market. He found he was afraid, like Skye, that she might desert him if she knew the truth.
Skye and Neon separated, and Neon headed back to town, still deep in thought. He had to meet Hyru at the inn, or she would get suspicious. He just hoped she wouldn’t ask him anything about his past here.
