Herbs

Because this is just a page for beginners, I will only list the magical properties of the herbs.  These herbs are NOT to be ingested.  These herbs are to be used for herbal pillows and incense.  I will warn which ones that are poisonous to ingest and some that may be irritating to the skin.  If you ingest a poisonous herb call your Poison Control service immediately.

I sugggest that as a beginner and if you live in an urban area, order your herbs from a supplier or co-op.  They know their herbs and you have less of a chance of getting the wrong herb.

First of all, How to make incense.  There are a few ways to make incense.  They make nice gifts and can aid you in your rituals and spells.  The main ingredients of incense are the aromatic herbs.  They can be any part of the herb scented with essential oils.  These essential oils can either be present naturally or added into the mixture later.  There are also aromatic gums which can be used in incense.  They are usually the resins from coniferous trees such as pine.  Dragons blood may also be used.

The simplest way of making incense is to choose the herbs that you want in your mixture, ground them and place some of the mixture on burning charcoal.  For stick and cone incense, buy some gum arabic or acacia gum and mix it into the mixture of herbs that you are using.  These bonding agents will allow you to adhere the mixture to a broom straw or form it into a cone.

Now to the herbs.

These are the lore of the herbs, usually they are used in amulets, pouches or pillows.  They aid in ritual and magical workings.

I am going to leave out most of the poisonous herbs, such as aconite and the like.

Acorns:  acorns are the seeds of oaks.  They are used in fertility magic, either that of the conception of a child or to bring a project into fruitfulness.  They can be used to decorate altars and in amulets.

Anise:  Useful for treating those who feel unfulfilled and think that romance would cure it.  It can be used in spells to aid a person in finding happiness.  It can also be used to protect against nightmares or disturbing dreams.

Apple:  Apples can be eaten for good luck during the time of samhain.  They are also a source of wisdom and good health.

Basil:  Used to gain courage and strength.  It also protects against the unknown.

Chamomile:  Chamomile, when used in amulets, spells and other magical workings, will ensure the success of that endeavor.

Cinnamon:  Cinnamon, as taken in a tea or incense, can be used to aid concentration and the focusing of the mind.

This page is a work in process.  I will add more to the herb section as I go along.  For now I am going to progress onto other topics.

Candles

I am not sure if the use of candles is a new age idea, but it can be a help in focusing your intent and desire.  Many sources will tell you about the meaning of colors and how the colors may be used in spells.  I will just go over the basics. Some will say to charge your candles with your intent and the method is really up to the practitioner.  I will present the methods that I use and then I will move onto color meanings.
