August 27th 2004

I love the Year of Jewelry idea.  I'm the kind of person that puts off making jewelry or I get an idea and I'm too afraid to actually make it.  Now I'll have the extra push to really get things made.
August 25th 2004 Week 1
Well week one came and went and I learned so much. I'm learning how to build a web page on Geocities which I always wanted to do but was too afraid to try.  Since I really don't know what I'm doing I suppose I'll have to start with week one and add on from there.  The above "Year of Jewelry" link will lead everyone to the weekly pictures and I'll change things as I learn.

Now about my first piece:  I have made a few beaded "pigtail" or wrapped loop necklaces with an attached pendant which sold immediately so I figure I better make a bunch more over the year.  This time I didn't make an attached pendant.  I made a large loop to fit over the pearls to make it more versatile and I made a pair of matching earrings as well.
I have no idea what to make for week 2 and it's already Sunday night!!

September 1 2004 Week 2
I don't know why I always seem to wait to the last minute to make my pieces.  I couldn't think of what to make and since I've sold so many pairs of these earrings and have none left I decided I need to stock up.  My best sellers are these and the bead link necklace with a pendant like the one in week one. The pattern for these earrings are in WAJ. I used Swarovski pearls for pieces.

I decided to try my hand at freeform this week hence the matching pendant.  I visualized it as I was going to sleep the other night and although I didn't have a finished picture in my mind this is what I wanted to end up with.  It was a little scary, but I just let the wire take me with it.  The only thing I strived for was balance, which I think I attained.

My new idea is to have people interact with me each week by commenting on the pieces in my Guestbook.  I hope this works!!
September 8 2004 Week 3
So here we are at week three.  I went back to work this week and the kids are back at school so my life is not my own.  I put this together quickly so I wouldn't miss this week.

I could use some help.  I would like to know how to post smaller pictures and then be able to click on the picture and have it enlarge.  Any suggestions either email me or write it in my Guestbook.

I also have been playing with Photoshop Elements.  I figured out how to do some gradient backgrounds but I don't know how to actually get my photo on top of the background so any suggestions would be helpful.

September 15 2004 Week 4
Well I finally did it.  I figured out how to add a link to enlarge the picture on the page!!!!!!!!!  yayyyyyyyyyyyy...  I'll have to do that to the first picture also.  This has been a great learning experience all around.

This week I decided to wrap a cab which I hadn't done in a long while.  When I first started working with wire I bought mostly 40 X 30 size cabs because I like big, but I found out not everyone else does, so I bought some smaller ones like the moonstone here and you know what?  I like this size for everyday and I received mucho compliments at work today.  It's very difficult to see the fire in the cab and beads in this scan.  I think the picture would have come out better if I used my camera but this is all practice for me.

Next I need to learn how to use Photoshop Elements.  I tried tonight to layer or to have two pictures on the same page with a nice layout and background but I had no idea how to do it.  I supposed I'll have to play and post questions on the forum.

September 23 2004 Week 5
I love making these kinds of bangles.  I make different variations in GF and silver with all different sizes and color beads.

I just realized that I can change the size and the width of this page.  I'm not going to change all my pictures to fit in the wider page dimensions, but at least I'll know I can do it for when I set up a little website on Geocities to sell my jewelry to the people at work with out having to bring everything in with me.  They can pick out what they want to see and then I'll bring it in and they will know the prices before hand.

September 29 2004 Week 6
As I watch the Presidential debates I will catch up and write.

I visualized these earrings and had that picture in my mind for a while. The oval bead is aquamarine and it was very smooth and slippery which made it harder for the coil around the bead to stay in place.  I think next time I'll make the jump rings holding the top component smaller.  I like these earrings and they look good on and I like the way they move.  Any comments welcome

October 6 2004 Week 7
I really like this piece except for a few things. I usually put one loop on the top to attach to the necklace but this time I used two loops and then put beads next to it. If you click on the button below I have a picture of how I usually make this piece.  I like the head hanging on the bottom because it makes it unique and the beads I used are more earthy than the pearls I usually use.  One other thing I don't like is that I think the overall piece is too big but there are always those people that like big.  The earrings are a recent WAJ project that are very easy to make.  I thought they blended well with the earthy tone of the necklace.

October 13 2004 Week 8
I've wanted to make this bracelet ever since I saw it in WAJ.  I had decided to make it a necklace instead so I used 20g instead of 18g for the love knot.  As I was going along it seemed very heavy for it to be a necklace because of the rings in between the links.  Even though it's 20g it's holding up well as a bracelet.  I do plan on making a 24 inch necklace as soon as I have a minute.

I showed my husband the bracelet and he liked it shiny.  He used to be a jeweler and he owned a jewelry store before he went into teaching.  He suggested that we try to set something up to rhodium plate the silver so it won't tarnish.  I hope we can do this because I really dislike the way the silver tarnishes and people these days are used to rhodium plated jewelry.  I would be interested in hearing your opinions on this.  Just leave your comments in the Guestbook above.

October 20 2004 Week 9
I started making a bracelet that I was having trouble with.  It was a busy week and I didn't have time to finish the bracelet so I made these quick simple earrings.  I find you can never have too many earrings to sell and these would go for about $10.00 - $12.00.  There are always the people that need to buy something but don't want to spend a lot of money. That actually is me when I go to craft fairs. I have to buy something usually jewelry because I think of it as art.  If the jewelry is too expensive I come home with at least a pair of earrings.

Coming Soon That Darn Bracelet That's Giving Me Trouble!!!!!!!!
November 3 2004 Week 11
I really wanted to make a different WAJ project but I had an order for this earring and no time to make anything else. The picture isn't that great, I think I over corrected it but practice makes perfect!  I used Swarovski crystals and pearls with gold-filled wire.

November 10 2004 Week 12
I had some leftover rings from one of Aislyn's kits and I wanted to use them some how.  I started making the box chain without knowing what I was going to do with it and then the light bulb came on.  I thought I would try it on the leather cord so it wouldn't be so heavy as a whole necklace and then I could also charge less for it.  I needed to cut some more rings which I actually sawed myself and voila!  I used two woven Karen Hill Tribe beads to tie it all together.  I plan on making some more of these with different weaves since the response I received was excellent when I wore it to work.  Comments welcome.

Week 13
November 17 2004
Since I haven't had much time and I'm doing a show December 11th I decided to make ordinary things to sell for Christmas gifts.  These are long dangle earrings made from Karen Hill Tribe beads just looped together.  So the next few YOJ weeks will be ordinary and then after Christmas I'll try some things I've been dreaming about.

Week 14
November 24 2004
More of the ordinary.  Freshwater pearls 4mm, wrapped loop necklace with a drop that can be taken off.  The drop is made from Tourmaline rondelles and briolettes.  The earrings again are long drops with Tourmaline on the bottom.  The whole set is very dainty.

Week 15
December 1 2004
Here is another danish knot bracelet but this time it has lampwork beads made by CWJ's Susan Burnwash.  If you would like to see how beautiful Susan's beads are double click on the picture to enlarge.  Still making ordinary pieces but I have an idea for a pin that I'll make during my Christmas vacation.  I also made matching earrings which I'll post during week 17.

Week 16
December 8 2004
These earrings were fun to make.  The idea came from Bead and Button magazine I believe.  I have since made different variations on this earring.  I used soft wire for these earrings and another time I used hard wire and it really comes out looking differently with the hard wire.  I'll take pictures of the other earrings soon and post for you to see the difference.  What I don't like about these earrings is the fact that the hooks and the bottom beads move all over the place when you're not wearing them and you have to jiggle them back to the right place.
Any comments welcome.

Week 17
December 15 2004
This was earring week.  I had a small show to do so I had to make some fast earrings.  I sell the herringbone earrings for $15.00-$20.00 and they go quickly for gifts.  Three of my students asked me to make earrings for them to give to their mothers for Christmas.  I made them the earrings and one of the kids showed the earrings to my Assistant Principal who then said "Wow, maybe we can get together an after school class on jewelry making." Boy would I love to do that, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

December 22 2004 Week 18
This pendant and necklace was made for a special person.  I like the combination of stones and the colors really enhance each other.  If you double click on the image you'll see just the pendant enlarged and you will be able to see the color combination better.  I would really like some honest feedback on this piece.  Just sign in the Guestbook and comment.

Well I'm off now for Christmas vacation and I'm hoping to have time now to make some original pieces.

December 29 2004 Week 19
I have been falling behind so I quickly made this piece to see if I can still make prongs.  The color mix is interesting but the piece seems blah next to some of the pieces I recently made. I also made matching prong earrings but I forgot to photograph them.  I haven't done weeks 20 and 21 yet so just move on past them to see the weeks beyond.  When I do complete those weeks ignore this message.

Week 20
January 5 2005
I saw this heart in a magazine and gave it a try.  I actually ran out of wire to twist around the base but I thought I would finish it anyway just to see it completed.  The wrapped twisted wire was supposed to continue around the top of the coil and it would look better if I could have done that.  When you see this picture enlarged you'll see how raw it really is.

This bangle was made for a Connie Fox bangle swap and it was the first bangle like this I have made.  I used silver and copper beads from Connie and Raku beads from elsewhere.  If you notice on the 2 bottom beads near the swan clasp I tried a little something with the patina.  I used liver of sulfur but a very tiny piece of the rock and a very light liquid not too hot as well.  When the beads started turning bluish I took it out of the liquid and didn't polish it.  I really like the way it looks, but I figure it's bound to rub off.  If anyone reading this knows how to keep patina on please leave a message in my Guestbook.

January 26 2005 Week 24
I saw these earrings in a magazine and making them was really easy. When I was finished making them I thought that a necklace made out of the swirl link would look great, so keep your eyes open for that necklace.  The stone is onyx and I used 16 gauge for the swirl and wrapped it in 22 gauge silver.

For a closer look double click on the picture.

Week 25
I made this necklace using the same links as last weeks earrings.  The necklace feels really nice on and lies just perfectly.  I sold it off my neck the first day I wore it, to someone at work.  If you double click on the picture you will see a closeup, or just look at last weeks earrings to see the link used.  I like this necklace and feel it will be a good seller in both silver and yellow gold.

February 9, 2005 Week 26
I just learned about African trade beads and fell in love with them.  I love the colors available and the meaning of the design of each bead.  This is my first time making a Connie Fox Brangle.  One of the reasons I like making this kind of bracelet is the fact that the asymmetry makes it interesting.  I like chunky not delicate jewelry so this also fulfills that need for bigness.  I ordered a whole bunch of interesting Trade Beads which you will see used in future projects.  I also promised to give you some of the history of trade beads which I will do in week 27.
