| John Simon Ritchie, the man who would later become Sid Vicious was born May 10th 1957 in England. He was a high school drop out and was drafted by a man named Malcolm McLaren to become a part of a band called the Sex Pistols, it was McLaren's idea to exploit the disaffected youth of London, England. Sid got his nickname from John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten and when the Sex Pistols became famous Sid was only 19., they topped the charts with songs such as Anarchy in the U.K and God Save the Queen, the week God Save the Queen hit number one on the charts there would be a blank spot, signifying just how much the Pistols were getting under everyones skin which was what they were meant to do, meant to represent rebellion and anarchy.. However they didn't know how short of a run it would be. Sid has been described in so many different ways it's hard to understand if one description or all of them are correct, he is often described as someone who was very fearful and self- concious of who they were and didn't totally understand what exactly was happening around him, other times he has been described as destructive, rude, cruel, nasty as well as self-destructive, being a self-injurer while on stage and off. His mother who had a history of heroin abuse herself said Sid was actually quite shy while others say he may have actually feared the audiences they played for and sometimes showed no emotion at all. It is quite possible that the controversial Sid Vicious was all of these things rolled into one and simply forgot which role he was meant to play in the world. In 1977 Sid would meet the woman that he would fall in love with.. Only nineteen Sid met Nancy Spungen who had worked as a prostitute in London and whose dream was apparently to bed a Sex Pistol, Sid being quite the easy target. The two volatile individuals quickly became a couple and moved in together. Although not many people liked Nancy and it has been said that she was one of the most unpleasant people you could ever meet, however if you wanted Sid around he always came with Nancy. Johnny Rotten tried to convince Sid to get rid of her and the bassist refused, he needed only two things, Nancy and heroin. His relationships in the past had not exactly been ordinary so people say he got caught up in the sex and drugs. Soon after in 1978 the Sex Pistols broke up none being able to handle Sid's recent volatile and very angry behavior when seperated from Nancy during the bands only major tour. Things worsened in October 12 when police entered the Chelsea Hotel room where Sid and Nancy had been staying to find Nancy crumpled under the bathroom sink in only her bra and panties bloody and dead from a stab wound to the abdomen. Sid was arrested for her murder while in a drugged stupor and later released on bail. Four days prior to Nancy's death her mother spoke to her and Nancy had talked about her and Sid getting help for their addiction and admitted to Sid hitting her. Ten days after being released on bail Sid tried to kill himself slashing from wrist to elbow with a knife all the while screaming of how much he wanted to be with his Nancy and wanted to be left alone. Soon after Sid's mother went to live with him and take care of him. On February 1, 1979, Beverly, Sid's mother bought him heroin and stayed with him after he injected it, the next morning when she brought him tea he was cold to the touch, Sid Vicious, died at age 21, too soon before his time and his ashes were scattered over Nancy's grave. He as well as their romance became rock legend. And the turbulent relationship was immortalised on film in the movie Sid and Nancy and likewise the Pistol's in The Filth and The Fury. Sid being the epitomy of live fast and die young.... |
