The Roots
The gothic culture got it's start in the olde days of punk.  See, punk spun off and made stuff like Siouxsie and the Banshees and Bauhaus.  And deathrock - basically darker, more creepy theatric punk music. It all thrived in the early eighties, but then interest started to wane.  Although... in the late eighties and early nineties, a second generation came into the fold.  They were the first to really say "I'm goth!".  So some first gen'ers didn't like that, and they called each other poseurs and stuff.  Eventually the dust settled and they joined together.  But, oh goodness, with stuff like Marilyn Manson in the late nineties, all these little tykes started to call themselves goth and beat people up and worship the Devil.  Hence the third generation.  The first two gens don't like these people to this day... but, hey - some of us see some potential in them to grow their adult wings and fly off to the dark side of the moon.  Translated: They'll grow up to be fine.
