Shutting down Windows - The BAT way

DOS batch files are ASCII text files which contains DOS commands. Batch files can be created with any text editor such as notepad and saved with the extension of .bat. Windows XP provides a new command along with it's Command Prompt that is the command line editor. The command is Shutdown. Here's how you can shutdown windows really quick. Open notepad. Type the following lines exactly as they are given below

                 @echo off

                  shutdown -t 05

Save the file with the following name sdown.bat. Be sure to have set the Save as file type to All files. Otherwise notepad will save the file as sdown.bat.txt. Now if you double click on the file from windows, Windows will shutdown in 05 seconds.

 Changing Windows Startup Music

Are you bored with the same old Windows XP start up sound? Well you can replace with your very own waveform sound. When the Windows Starts up it plays a file called Windows XP Startup.wav. The file is located in the folder c:\WINDOWS\Media. The nameof the file is Windows XP Startup.wav. Move the file to any other folder. Rename the wav file which you want to set as your start up music as Windows XP Startup.wav  and paste it in the folder c:\WINDOWS\Media and voila your music will be played every time you  open your computer.

Changing Windows Shutdown Music

The changing operation is the same as changing the shutdown music. The name of the wav file in this case is Windows XP Shutdown.wav. This file is kept in the same folder that is c:\WINDOWS\Media. Rename the wav file that you want to set as your shutdown music as Windows XP Shutdown.wav. Cut and paste the original Windows XP Shutdown.wav to any other folder incase you prefer to use it again or you may simply delete it if you wish. Now move the file you just renamed as Windows XP Shutdown.wavto the c:\WINDOWS\Media and then it is done.

Changing the boot device-The entry point of the hacker

A hacker can boot any computer even if it has a system password by using a bootable floppy disk. But what if the first boot device of the computer is set as the hard disk? It is a sticky situation as the bootable floppy will come of no use. We have to then change the boot device. To change the boot device, first switch on the computer and keep on pressing the DEL key. This will take you to the BIOS set up screen. (BIOS is the acronym for Basic Input Output System). Select the Advance BIOS Features option and press Return option. Select the first boot device option and press Enter. Set the first boot device as floppy disk. Press ESC twice. In the Save to CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) option, press "y" and press Enter. Now the computer should boot from the bootable floppy.

Warning:- If there is a CMOS password given, you will be prompted to enterthe passowrd before you can change any BIOS setting.
