Valkyries were warrior maidens, known as 'choosers of the slain'. It was the Valkyries job to scour the battlefield, on their winged horses, (Pegasi), for brave warriors cut down in battle and deliver them to Vallhalla, where they would feast and drink and fight for eternity. Valkyries wore armor, and either a feathered cloak or helm, and carried either a spear or a sword. Valkyries were born mortal women, and were chosen by the gods to take on the task of messengers and choosers of the slain. As long as a Valkyrie remained a virgin, and followed the wishes of the gods, they were made immortal, and invulnerable to all things. Seeing a Valkyrie in battle was either an omen of death, or great victory. The Aurora Borealis, (Northern Lights), were said to be caused by the Valkyries armor when they flew far to the north.
