Runes were used for magical purposes and divination, as well as the alphabet. The first six letters of the norse alphabet of twenty six letters make up the runes. Unlike our alphabets each rune had a different name, meaning, and description. The runes are the reason Odin hung himself from Yggdrasil, in order to gain an understanding of their power.
