Freyja's most prized possession it was. Freyja got this necklace by sleeping with four dwarves, known as the Brisings, and it was said to enhance her beauty. Odin got a little disgusted at Freyja's sleeping around and asked Loki to steal the necklace to teach her a lesson, but unfourtunatly he was caught by Heimdall and the necklace was given back.
