Basically, a historical fiction set in Rome. I'm not sure about the exact time period. Perhaps the 60s or 70s BC.

So, a Roman girl meets a Roman man, and the latter is rather disliked by the general public, because he's unpleasant and has a bad temper and other things. I'm not sure exactly what happens, but she's nice to him when she meets him and performs some act of kindness. Now, she's nice and polite by nature, but he thinks she's pretty spiffy anyway and pursues her while working on his attitude. She starts to like him, but there are a few problems including his reputation and the fact that her parents soon have her engaged to the son of a family friend whom she finds repulsive. Drama ensues, and [spoiler] someone dies in the end [/spoiler]. Will probably end up looking like Romeo and Juliet: Roman Edition, because I fail at life. :D
