Midshipman Crawford served on board the 74 gun HMS Excellent, under the command of Captain Stopford.
On the 20 February 1801 Captain Stopford sent out a cutting out party to bring off a sloop and a cutter at anchor near Point de Quiberon. The party was under the command of Lieutenant Church. Unknown to Church a chasse maree arrived, which was taking troops to Belle Ile, and anchored near to the two vessels. In an attempt to tkae the chasse maree Chruch was wounded and two more men killed. Midshipmen Crawford and Manning and a number of seamen managed to board the cutter Arc and bring it out to sea. On board were a number of troops who were made prisoners. |
