On 2 September 1943 John was commissioned Pilot Officer on probation as per the London Gazette, dated 26 October 1943.
On 28 April 1944 John was confirmed in his appointment and promoted to the rank of Flying Officer as per the London Gazette, dated 19 May 1944.
