John was an Ordnance Artificer 5th Class on board HMS Airdale.
On 16 June 1942 John was killed in action when HMS Airdale was bombed by Junker Ju88 bombers South of Crete. The attack so badly damaged the dsestroyer that she was scuttled by HMS Aldenham.
