On 9 June 1941 James was commisioned Acting Pilot Officer on Probation as per the London Gazette dated 18 July 1941.
This appointment was confirmed on the 9 June 1942 and James was promoted to Flying Officer (War Substantive) on 9 August as per the London Gazette dated 21 August 1942.
