On 1 July 1939 Brigadier J S Crawford was promoted to the rank of Colonel as per the London Gazette, dated 14 November 1939.
On 1 July 1940 he was promoted to the rank of Major General as per the london Gazette, dated 2 August 1940.
On 6 February 1946 Major General J S Crawford retired from the Army and was retained on the active list.
