On the 9 January 1943 Halifax W7751 took off at 16.02 hrs from Rufforth on Operation Gardening Broccoli (The Great Belt). As the bomber approached Esbjerg it was shot down by flak from 2.lei.Flak Abt. 742 and crashed at Bryndum at 18.26hrs killing five of the crew, including Ian.

Sergeant Llewellyn was badly injured and died of wounds received on the 15th January. Sgt Skinner was captured and sent to Stalag VIIIB

Sergeant Ian Kieran Crawford is buried at Esbjerg (Fourfelt) Cemetery, AIII.8.12.
