Charles was granted a commision for the duration of the hostilities as an Acting Pilot Officer on probation as of 28 February 1941 as per the London Gazette, dated 21 March 1941.
This appointment was confirmed on 28 February 1942 and on 16 May 1942 Charles was promoted to Flying Officer as stated in the London Gazette dated 16 June 1942.
On 1 January 1944 Charles was promoted to the rank of Flight Lieutenant as per the London Gazette, dated 21 January 1944.
