On 13 September 1939 Arnold was promoted to Lieutenant and Paymaster as per the London Gazette dated 10 October 1939.
On 27 January 1944 Arnold resigned his commision due to ill health and was granted the honourable rank of Captain, as per the London Gazette, dated 28 January 1944.
